The father’s desire was for an overall theme designed around the logo of the White Star Line, which was the company that built and owned the Titanic, with a surrounding pattern of the foliate décor used on her 2nd class dinnerware. With that in mind, I set about to modify the foliate pattern as shown on the dinner platter artifacts retrieved from the Titanic so that it could create an artistic surround on the top of the box and be incorporated into the style of carving that I use. After creating the surround, I then carved the White Star Line logo but sized it so it would be more prominent than the logo on the actual serving pieces. As an aside, I chose the lid of this particular box specifically because it had a grain pattern that evoked a seascape. I knew by my experience with the wood involved, that when a finish was applied, this particular grain pattern would show highlights that would mimic the aspects of a rolling sea. |
