The Officer's name, rank, branch of service, and active duty dates were carved on the underside of the lid.
A rope border and corner anchors, elements symbolic of Navy life surrounded these. Lastly, a banner
bearing the inscription "Bravo Zulu" (a traditional Navy saying for a "job well done") was carved.
