The Byzantine Interlacement Band is based
on a painting in the church of Saint Sophia, Constantinople (Hagia Sophia).
The band is a repeating pattern that would go on indefinitely in all four
directions if not confined by the border that I imposed. This is a deeply
carved pattern.
The central rosette from
the top of the box was repeated on the front panel and was highlighted
by simple, but elegant, calligraphy swirls.
